Two siblings charged in Norton warehouse fire
NORTON: A Barberton man and a sister who lives in Akron are accused of setting a Norton warehouse on fire this month.The two are accused of setting fire Feb. 5 to cover up a theft at the warehouse on Cleveland-Massillon Road.Fire investigators say the warehouse’s sprinkler system extinguished fires set in six areas of the warehouse for the Route 80 Express Inc. trucking company.William B. Smith Jr., 45, of Wooster Road, was to be in Barberton Municipal Court Wednesday to face charges of arson and aggravated theft. He remains in jail.Smith worked at the warehouse, which is used as a distribution center for Volvo parts.His sister, Angela R. Smith, 41, of West Long Street, is also charged with arson and also remains in jail.William Smith is accused of stealing metal steering wheel parts that have a listed value of $1.35 million.Norton Police Chief Thad Hete said it is believed that Smith started taking the parts last July and used a company forklift to move the pallets of parts to a pickup truck. The parts were then scrapped for metal.Hete said investigators believe about 9,000 metal parts were taken to scrap yards and sold for about $1,000 each trip.Investigators contend that Smith panicked when he discovered that the pallets were to be shipped to a Volvo plant on Feb. 6, and he tried to burn down the warehouse with the help of his sister to hide the theft.The chief said more arrests are pending.Correspondent Gina Mace contributed to this report.
